Chairman of the Forum, Mr. Wole Badmus said the excuse that the judges have not been convicted of the crimes they’ve been accused of is not tenable because the NJC has shown little interest in dealing with allegation of corruption among judges.
He noted that the judges have to step aside or be suspended to allow for proper investigations because they “have been tainted in the court of public opinion.”
Badmus said, “If the affected Judges/Justices fail to step down, we will mobilise Nigerians to besiege their courts until they have heeded the call to step down, which even their allies-the NBA-as well as the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, have endorsed.
“We are hereby calling on the serving Judges/Justices who were arrested by the DSS to immediately step down, since the conniving NJC is not willing to suspend them. Even though the arrested Judges/Justices have not been declared guilty by any court of law, they have been tainted in the court of public opinion and their positions are no longer tenable until they have been able to clear themselves of the allegations against them.”
He also said, “We will also embark on peaceful demonstrations in support of the battle to rid the judiciary of bad eggs. We want to say that this is not Buhari’s war, neither is it the war of any political party.
“It is the war of all Nigerians, and we call on all our citizens not to allow themselves to be misled by those who have constituted themselves to a stumbling block against this war.”
Badmus explained that the forum believes that it is wrong to assume that everybody in the Judiciary is corrupt hence the need for the judiciary to cleanse itself from within by getting rid of a few bad eggs whose activities cast the Judiciary in bad light.
The forum wondered why the NJC is “shielding” the indicted justices from being prosecuted.
They also argued that criticisms of methods employed by the Department of State Services in the sting operation which led to the arrest of the judges were uncalled for.
It urged the Federal Government to continue to take the lead in the prosecution of the battle against corruption in the judiciary.
Members of the forum also appealed to the Muhammadu Buhari- led Federal government to caution, the governors of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose and his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike who according to them had been using their immunity to obstruct the course of justice.
